Success Story: Sparking Change In The Classroom!

Doris Nkatia, a teacher and now a facilitator at the Wamfie Presbyterian primary school, volunteered to be trained as a Girls club facilitator at the primary level. She was recruited in October 2023-2024 academic year.

As teacher in class, Doris noticed that her lessons often seemed boring to the students, which made her feel very down. She participated in the new facilitators training workshop, which rekindled her passion for guiding and engaging with adolescent girls. The workshop provided her with a fresh perspective on how to connect with and inspire her students.

Doris had always been interested in the affairs of adolescent girls but felt nervous about how to make the club sessions exciting. With the support of her co-facilitator, she was motivated to learn more strategies to ensure successful sessions. One such strategy was learning various kinds of clapping techniques, which helped keep the club sessions active, fun, while boosting the girl’s confidence and self-esteem. The strategies specifically for the Girl’s Club also elevated her confidence as a teacher, her classes more interactive and engaging

Furthermore, despite being an adult, Doris realized there were aspects of reproductive health that she was not fully informed about, such as the menstrual cycle and contraception. She admitted to having misused emergency contraceptives due to the lack of knowledge. Now, she is proud to be well-informed about contraception and feels privileged to share this crucial information with the adolescent girls in her club and at home.

Through her dedication and the training, she received, Doris has transformed her teaching methods and her understanding of adolescent girls’ needs. Her success story is a testament to the power of continuous learning and the positive impact it can have on both educators and learners.
