Saving The Life Of Newborn Babies - The Case Of Baby Aisha

Baby Aisha Illiasu is a female baby delivered on 22/01/24 at 24weeks gestation with a birth weight of 800g and was severely distressed at birth. With their newly acquired skills in Essential Newborn Care, the midwives dried the baby thoroughly, suctioned and stimulated her. The midwives continued with bag and mask ventilation after which the baby started breathing. The baby was then rushed to the Newborn Care Unit (NCU) for further management where it was established that the baby was still in the stage of distress. Baby Aisha was then placed on CPAP machine donated by WHW for 3 hours after which her respiratory distress score has improved significantly.

Baby Aisha was then switched to plain oxygen and continued to receive care in an incubator She was being fed through Oro- gastric tube for 4 weeks since baby could not breastfeed, followed by Skin-to-Skin care. Baby was discharged at 8 weeks with the weight of 1160g. Kangaroo Mother Care (KMC) was then employed as a follow up care was ongoing. On 22/04/24, Baby Aisha’s weight had improved to 1635g.
